Marcus Vane doesn't make music in the traditional sense. He records it — from the world around him. Armed with high-sensitivity microphones and infinite patience, Vane captures the sonic textures of the Midwest: the harmonic resonance of ice forming on Lake Michigan, the near-silence of a snowfield at midnight, the rhythmic clang of a distant railroad crossing.
His installation work transforms these recordings into immersive sound environments. Visitors to his pieces often describe the experience as 'hearing a place for the first time,' even if they've lived there their entire lives.
Vane studied music technology at Berklee before relocating to Milwaukee in 2019. His work has been featured at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MOCA Chicago, and the Milwaukee Art Museum. His 2025 piece, Freeze/Thaw, was named one of the year's ten best sound installations by Art in America.
